While the global network of ground-based air monitoring stations is expanding, there are still many regions without access to real-time, publicly available air quality measurements. To help fill these gaps, IQAir provides estimated AQI data for locations that lack ground-based measurements. These estimates are calculated using satellite-derived PM2.5 data to offer guidance on air quality and help users make informed decisions to protect their health.
On the IQAir platform, including the website and app, we clearly indicate which locations display estimated AQI values, marked with an asterisk (*) behind the AQI number, so you can distinguish between satellite-based estimates and data from ground-based monitors.
Also, the data source section on the page will clearly indicate that the AQI has been modeled from satellite data.
